AIKash delivers real-time cricket commentary - with emotion, humour and local flavour - howsat?
In a groundbreaking development for Indian sports and technology, PlayVerse Technologies, a sports tech startup based in Bangalore, has unveiled AIKash, an AI-powered sports commentator set to transform cricket commentary in the country. The launch comes just weeks ahead of the 2025 ICC Cricket World Cup, aimed at enhancing the viewing experience for millions of cricket fans, particularly on digital platforms.
AIKash delivers real-time commentary in Hinglish, a blend of Hindi and English, enriched with emotional resonance, humour, and culturally relevant expressions. “We wanted to blend India’s passion for cricket with cutting-edge generative AI,” stated Sanjay Nambiar, the CEO and co-founder of PlayVerse. He emphasised that AIKash is more than just a bot; it reacts to live action—celebrating sixes and responding to wickets with the appropriate flair, even interjecting with dad jokes to keep the commentary lively.
The technology behind AIKash is robust, having been trained on over 10,000 hours of Indian cricket commentary along with a wealth of sportscasting data. This allows it to utilise a neural text-to-speech engine to generate coherent and natural-sounding audio, capable of responding to the dynamics of a live match. Key features include seamless switching between Hindi and English, mood modulation to reflect the game's intensity, and player backstories delivered mid-game to deepen fan engagement. Plans for regional language support in Tamil, Bengali, and Marathi are set for rollout by Q4 2025.
With a rapidly growing digital-first audience in India—over 325 million fans tuning in on smartphones—AIKash aims to cater to those seeking a more relatable and energetic form of commentary. “For tier-2 and tier-3 audiences, Hinglish isn’t just a convenience—it’s a connection,” explained Aarti Mahajan, a linguistics researcher from IIIT-Hyderabad, who contributed to the project.
This innovative offering by PlayVerse comes at a time when AI technologies are making significant inroads into sports broadcasting. In a parallel development, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has partnered with NEAR Protocol to introduce AI-driven enhancements for the upcoming ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025. Among these features is 'ICC Recapped,' designed to analyse fan interactions like match predictions and player-of-the-match votes to curate personalised recaps of matches. This tournament, scheduled to take place from 19 February to 9 March across venues in Pakistan and the UAE, aims to boost fan engagement using advanced technology.
Complementing this technological shift, the ICC has announced a prestigious commentary panel for the Champions Trophy, which includes notable broadcasters such as Nasser Hussain, Ian Smith, and Ian Bishop. They will provide comprehensive coverage featuring pre-match insights, in-depth analysis during innings intervals, and post-match reviews, promising to deliver an unparalleled viewing experience alongside innovative AI integrations.
Looking beyond cricket, PlayVerse has ambitious plans to extend AIKash’s capabilities to other sports such as kabaddi, football, and esports by 2026. Their long-term vision includes the possibility of hyper-personalised commentary, enabling users to select tones ranging from dramatic to witty, which could further diminish the traditional barriers between fans and the commentary experience.
As AIKash’s beta version goes live at aikash.live, user feedback will be crucial in refining the service. Thus, as Indian cricket fans prepare for an exciting season, the convergence of sport and technology appears poised to redefine how they engage with the game.
